Printerwhisperer:
From time to time I will notice my printer just isn’t printing at its peak performance. Just like any piece of machinery 3d printers required regular measured maintanence! Every printer will be a bit different and most user guides have a section on maintenance. Put scheduled maintenance into your calendar and your printers will print for many years to come, neglect them and they won’t last very long or give you optimum results for more than a few months at most.
I usually start by heating up the hot end and taking a small wire brush to the nozzle. I aim to make it look brand new. You might also want to run some cleaning filament through the nozzle and get it nice and clean.
https://www.amazon.com/eSUN-CLEANING-filament-Makerbot-MakerGear/dp/B00O92RW92/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1486143188&sr=8-3&keywords=cleaning+filament
Unload the filament and let the printer cool down and turn it off. Blow out the hobbed bolt with some compressed air and clean it with a dental pick. Blow off the fans of any dust and make sure they are operating smoothly. If needed blow out the control box.
Next and this will vary on some machines lubricate the lead screws on the z axis with a small amount of PTFE grease.
DO NOT LUBRICATE SMOOTH RODS. Most machines are coming with IGUS plastic bearings and these lubricate automatically. Just wipe the smooth rods clean with a paper towel.
Now go around and tighten up any bolts or nuts that may have loosened over the normal usage of the machine. I find especially around the head carriages these bolts like to come a bit loose adding play into the head. Tightening these will make a big difference on those low layer height prints.
Optional: Clean the bed. I like to start fresh from time to time and then reapply my bed coating. I use water and a little IPA. Some even take 2500 grit sandpaper and rough the surface after a cleaning.
Re-level the machine or check it. Run a first layer height test. You're done!
