Am I Nuts?!? Universally Loved NES Games I Just Don't Like At All
Some video games are just universally loved from days gone by. From Tetris, Super Mario Bros, The Legend of Zelda, these are just games that have stood the test of time. However there are a few universally loved games from the original Nintendo NES that I've never been a fan of, whether back when they were originally released or now today. Let's take a look at these games I just don't like at all and see if you think I am nuts with these opinions.
Honorable mention:
ALL RPGs (Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, etc)
Ok, I just don't like RPGs at all, and turn-based RPGs on the NES are incredibly well known and loved. I'm just not a fan myself, I never have been nor will I ever be. But my dislike of RPGs is well known so those would be very low-hanging fruit.
Rygar
It's important to note that the NES version of "Rygar" differs significantly from the arcade version. The NES version features a more expansive and exploratory world, with RPG-like elements, while the arcade version is more of a straight-action platformer. Rygar on the NES is remembered for its unique gameplay, challenging difficulty, and memorable atmosphere.
It's considered a classic NES title and has influenced later action-adventure games. I've just never enjoyed playing this, I don't think it's fun, I don't think it is good-looking, and overall I just don't care for it.
Rush'N Attack
Rush'n Attack on the NES was a brutally challenging Cold War-era action game. Featuring iconic knife combat & explosive power-ups, many love that Rush'n Attack delivers a pure, unfiltered retro gaming experience. One of the biggest features of the game was that you died if you simply took 1 hit. That's right, it features a 1-hit death which made it especially brutal to play.
The Adventures of Bayou Billy
The Adventures of Bayou Billy" is one of the most difficult games on the NES. It blends multiple genres into one challenging package. From hand-to-hand combat to high-speed chases and target practice, this game keeps you on your toes! I've just never found it very enjoyable as it just didn't seem to flow to me, the different gameplay styles weren't a ton of fun to me, and I thought it felt disjointed.
Bionic Commando
Much like some of these other games, Bionic Commando made the leap from Arcade to the NES, but I didn't care for either version of Bionic Commando. I get the gimmick, you can't jump but you have to use your arm to swing and reach different areas but I just didn't think it was very fun. I found the arm extension to be annoying and I didn't enjoy the mechanics at all. To me, it just left a lot to be desired.
