Why is Nintendo Discontinuing this Popular Feature Before Switch 2?
Nintendo does a lot of things right, but there are times when they do things that make you scratch your head. Nintendo has offered a rewards program, called the My Nintendo Rewards System, for physical and digital game purchases on the Switch. There are 2 different levels, platinum where nothing changes, and Gold which, sadly, is going away on March 24th, 2025. Let's take a look as we try to understand why Nintendo is discontinuing the popular feature before the launch of the Switch 2.
The My Nintendo Gold Points reward system is a program that allows you to earn points by purchasing eligible digital and physical games for Nintendo Switch. These points can then be redeemed for discounts on future digital purchases in the Nintendo eShop. You earn Gold Points equal to 5% of the purchase price (excluding tax) when you buy digital games or DLC from the Nintendo eShop or Nintendo's website. You earn Gold Points equal to 1% of the Nintendo eShop price for the digital version of the game when you register a physical game card. You can use your Gold Points to get discounts on digital games, DLC, and Nintendo Switch Online memberships in the Nintendo eShop.
Per Nintendo:
Beginning at 9:30 p.m. PDT on 3/24/2025, users will no longer be able to earn My Nintendo Gold Points. Gold Points will no longer be earned for digital purchases on Nintendo eShop after 9:30 p.m. PDT on 3/24/2025.
Gold Points will no longer be earned on physical games that release after 3/24/2025. For physical games that released on or before 3/24/2025, Gold Points may still be earned by registering eligible titles within one year from the original release date of the game. All earned Gold Points will continue to be valid and redeemable for 12 months after they are issued.
I'm bummed out that this program is coming to an end. It was a good way to get discounts on digital downloads down the road after making initial purchases. The Platinum points are kinda lame in my opinion, the Gold points really had value for me. Let me know what you think of this program ending in the comments.
