AMD is developing a new CPU socket, AM6, which will feature approximately two thousand one hundred pins, a significant increase from the one thousand seven hundred eighteen pins on the current AM5 socket. Despite the higher pin count, the AM6 socket is designed to maintain a similar size and shape to AM5, ensuring backward compatibility with existing heatsinks and cooling solutions. This design choice aims to ease the transition for users upgrading their systems.
The AM6 socket is not expected to arrive soon. AMD committed to supporting the AM5 platform until at least two thousand twenty-seven, meaning AM6 will likely debut with Zen seven-based CPUs around two thousand twenty-eight. This would give the AM5 socket a similar six-year lifespan to its predecessor, AM4. When it does launch, AM6 is anticipated to support next-generation DDR6 memory and be the first AMD platform to support PCIe Generation six.
The increased pin density on AM6 is crucial for supporting these new memory and PCIe standards. DDR6 memory is expected to double DDR5's JEDEC-approved data rate from six thousand four hundred MT per second to twelve thousand eight hundred MT per second, with overclocked speeds potentially exceeding sixteen thousand MT per second. This will also double memory bandwidth to nearly one hundred thirty-five gigabytes per second. Similarly, PCIe Generation six will double PCIe five's capabilities, reaching a maximum bandwidth of two hundred fifty-six gigabytes per second for a times sixteen graphics slot.
These advancements signify that the AM6 platform will be capable of handling extremely high data transfer rates, accommodating future high-performance CPUs, GPUs, and storage solutions. While specific details about Zen seven-based CPUs for AM6 are still early, with rumors suggesting up to thirty-two cores and TSMC's fourteen A node, the AM6 socket itself represents a foundational shift for AMD's future high-performance computing platforms.
