4Galaxy Squad is an Indie, Sci-Fi, Turn Based Tactics RPG Roguelike set in space, a sort of FTL / XCOM fusion where you are chased by the enemy fleet, plus Procedural Generation and XCOM style tactical trooper action!
The FTL influences add a real value to time, as your pursuers will catch you if you don’t take them seriously, and the numbers and battle mechs they are rocking mean business! Better move Freedom Fighters!
The XCOM influences are strong here too; there is tactical full and half cover to take, which can be blown to bits, many different weapons to find and buy that offer different strengths and weaknesses to fill certain rolls, and you can overwatch to cover your allies as you advance to flank an enemy position.
In Galaxy Squad, you build your team at the start, choosing the classes of your 3 starting troops, 1 of the 4 difficulty settings, and what your starting perk will be: bonus cash, fuel, gear, or increased starting lvl, with each helping out in different ways.
There is XCOM style lvl up system with your troops; let you specialize them as they lvl, focusing on attribute increases or special active ability on your troops, which differ depending on the class; impactful and meaningful stuff here.
Plus, you can have your ship help you in battle, engaging with cannons to dps and lock down the enemy, so the FTL parts interact well with the XCOM battle system; awesome Fire De LAZERS!
Graphically, Galaxy Squad has a Low polly look, which keeps performance requirements low, and it within reach of many systems.
I should mention that Galaxy Squad is made by Kazakov Oleg, the dev behind the excellent Gedonia, so don’t let the low polly look deter you, there is gameplay real meat here!
Meta Progression is present in the form of Glory, and is used to unlock new weapons, armor, character classes, skip types and cybernetic implants, as well as other game modes like Free Mode, Survival and Conquest; cool!
There is a story campaign mode too, which offers branching story lines, which has Procedural levels of course, and side quests to amass credits, used to hire mercs, purchase new gear for your people, and upgrade your ship.
Galaxy Squad is a Tactical, Turn-based, SciFi Roguelike RPG all about managing your credits, energy and fuel as you push forward, evading the pursuing enemy fleet as you battle in XCOM like engagements, gaining exp for your people, getting stronger and stronger for the final confrontation; good, tactical, RPG stuff. Fun.
