Another Lemmings Colour Palette Hack This Time For The PAL Mega Drive
Yay! More little hairy, jelly bean rodents with big Ringo Starr noses and Beatle haircuts.
In today's video I present you with another Lemmings colour hack, but this time it's designed intentionally for the optimised PAL version of Lemmings on the PAL SEGA Mega Drive.
This video starts off very slowly and gets better as it goes on, I apologise for dragging it on at times but I was very tired when I recorded this.
This colour hack was made by J.Russell and he has gone and made a lot of edits in the colours to make them pop out more and to be closer to the Commodore Amiga original. I have also had the wonderful privilege of adding some of my own contributions to this hack in the way of fixing up the script and level title names and also correcting a few typos just like in the Slogra colour hack. But first let's get to Josho's colour edits.
J.Russell's colour and text edits:
1. All earth and grass levels have correct colours.
2. All blue, icy crystal levels look more like the Amiga and the centre of the poles are now coloured black instead of adjacent blue to the background.
3. All red hell levels now look far better than what is on the Commodore Amiga and all the other ports. They now have really dark reddish brown, coloured bricks which are more pleasing to the eyes and a darker red on the exits.
4. The yellow brick and pillar tile sets have a slightly different yellowish gold.
5. The Lemmings hud on the bottom of the screen has had a makeover sporting more darker browns.
6. The intro animation has lighter enhanced colours.
7. Title screen has a slight makeover in colour.
8. The mode ending Lemming animation with the sign post has lighter colours.
9. The backdrop Lemming in the ending sequence now has a more pinkish tinge to match the Sega Master System's cover art.
10. The text colours are now changed from yellow to coffee brown.
11. ''Just Dig !'' is now corrected to ''Just Dig!''.
12. When the level ends and the screen says ''RIGHT ON'' when collecting the level's required percentage is now changed back to ''SPOT ON'' like in the Amiga original.
Adrian Gauna's level title text edits:
1. FUN LEVEL 10: Smile if you love Lemmings
2. FUN LEVEL 26: Nightmare on Lem street
3. TRICKY LEVEL 4: Been there, seen it, done it.
4. TRICKY LEVEL 6: Lemmings in the basement
5. TRICKY LEVEL 16: Luvly Jubly
6. TRICKY LEVEL 17: Diet Lemmingade
7. TAXING LEVEL 16: Mary Poppin's land.
8. MAYHEM LEVEL 20: No added colours or Lemmings
9. Fixed a typo in the ending credits. GRAPICHS fixed to GRAPHICS
TIME STAMPS:
1. J.Russell's colour and text edits: (00:00)
2. My level text edits and typo fixes (12:10)
3. Josh's approval and how to get the ROM (25:37)
4. My personal experience with ROMHACKING(.)NET (27:54)
5. Sound driver facts (35:06)
This time I had approval to go ahead and add the level title edits and because of this joint effort between me and Josho, the hack is now available on ROMHACKING(.)NET in patch form.

Just for a laugh, check out the Zero Wing NTSC 60Hz patch that makes absolutely no difference from the PAL ROM: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/3497/
NOTES:
1. This patch has to be patched to the PAL Mega Drive ROM, patching it to the NTSC-J/NTSC-U ROM will not work!
2. Don't attempt to play the PAL Mega Drive ROM either (original retail version or this hack in NTSC 60Hz) if you do, be prepared for epileptic flashes.
3. This hack is fully optimised for 50Hz playback, the Lemmings move very fast and fluid across the screen.
4. I think Josho left the rusted pipe and brick tile sets as they were in the original retail version. I think he said that because Sunsoft already got the colour palette identical to the Commodore Amiga original, he felt there was no need to change anything on it.
5. The name Sunsoft sounds like a skin cream company or a company that makes fresh linen and towels.
6. This game's sound driver is a beast! But if you watch all the way to the end I let you in on what i've discovered about it and why you can't play samples and FM/PSG all together like in most other games.
7. Despite really loving this port of the game, there are some things that annoy me about it. For instance: I hate how the original Fun levels 14, 15 & 16 have been removed and replaced by inferior ones. I really loved building that literal stairway to heaven in level 16. Also hate how level 21 of Tricky was changed, All the 6's is replaced by a really frustrating blocking and blowing level. It also annoys me how the music doesn't follow a set playlist like in every other port, again it's to do with the sound driver switching sound banks. The music tracks are stored in 2 sound banks and it constantly, randomly switches between the two.
Enjoy the video and don't ever lose that Lemming feeling.
