The only man found guilty of the murders of two soldiers outside their army barracks in Antrim in 2009, has had his conviction quashed. However Brian Shivers, who is terminally ill, will remain in custody until the prosecution service decides whether he is to face a retrial.
Sappers Mark Quinsey and Patrick Azimkar were shot dead by two Real IRA gunmen as they collected a pizza delivery at the gates of their army barracks, shortly before they were due to be deployed to Afghanistan.
The appeal court in Belfast ruled today that the conviction of Brian Shivers was unsafe because no ruling was made as to when he became aware of the murder plot.
