The 2nd generation of GuitarFreaks(GF for short) series, released by Konami. With a newer hardware and e-amusement service, V series has much more contents then original GF series(1st~11th).
There are 8 games in GF V series; V to V8. From V7 to V8, those games were referred as downgrade versions of GF XG series. Interfaces, graphics, and songs were the same, but EXTRA STAGE, ENCORE STAGE and other contents were different; LOTS of them could be played in XG series COULDN'T BE ABLE to play in V series.

Actually, Konami BEMANI Python 2 Hardware was based on Sony PlayStation 2, and Konami made this hardware itself for the first time. Pop'n music series(9 to 14 Fever!) also used this hardware, and when attendants opened up cabinet, they could see the main board and sub board designed by Konami. However, when GuitarFreaks, DrumMania, and DDR(from SUPERNOVA to SUPERNOVA 2) used this hardware, they used REAL SONY PLAYSTATION 2 as a sub board. When attendants opened those games cabinets, they could see REAL PLAYSTATION 2 CONSOLE. Because of this thing, there were lots of tries for running those games by using PlayStation 2 Emulator.
From this game to V8, they supporrt 640x480 resolution. From 4th to 11th MIX, the resolution depended on the mode; Title, Mode Select, Music Select, Result Screen were used 640x480, but when the music was started, the resolution was 320x240.

넘버링 기타프릭스 시리즈의 뒤를 이어 출시한 신작. 이전까지 시스템 573 기판을 사용하던 것에서 플레이스테이션2 호환 기판인 Python 2 기판으로 교체. 저장매체도 CD-ROM에서 하드디스크로 교체. 때문에 이전작들이 용량 문제로 곡을 삭제하거나 e-amusement(이하 이어뮤) 온라인 상태에서만 플레이 가능하도록 조치한 것에서 비교적 자유로웠다. V 시리즈는 V8까지 이어지고, 그 이후에는 XG 시리즈가 전개되었으며, XG 시리즈 이후에는 기타도라 시리즈가 지금까지 이어지고 있다.
- 이야깃거리 -
본래 Python 2 기판은 자체 제작 기판이 맞지만, V 시리즈가 개발되던 2005년 당시에는 부품 수급 문제로 그냥 플레이스테이션2를 그대로 기판에 설치하였다. 때문에 V 시리즈 작품들의 기판을 보면, 플레이스테이션2 본체가 그대로 설치되어 있는 모습을 볼 수 있다.
본 작품부터 플레이 화면에서도 640x480 해상도를 지원한다. 그전까지는 플레이 화면은 320x240 해상도를 지원했고, 플레이 화면을 제외한 나머지는 모두 640x480 해상도를 사용. 이 가변 해상도 설정은 시스템 573 기판을 사용하는 게임들 일부에서 찾아볼 수 있는 설정이었다.
본 작품의 엑스트라 스테이지에서 선곡할 수 있는 곡 오니히메는 바로 이전 작품인 11th MIX에서 앙코르 스테이지 전용곡이었다.
