I've been excited at the opportunity to get a hold of some of the Dungeons and Laser terrain after the second kickstarter ended. The amount of goodies included with a pledge was quite staggering, considering the buy in.
The most recent Dungeons and Lasers campaign had wrapped up quite recently, and offered up yet another impressive pile of loot for what the buy in cost. I'd like to think I've got a pretty good eye on things when it comes to kickstarter and good values and Archon's Woodhaven campaign offered up quite a feast of plastic, not just terrain and scenery bits, but actual minis to populate whatever you build as well. I'll put a link at the bottom if you are curious to check it out.
Much like any other terrain system, you get out of it what you put into it. The building and layout is pretty simple and intuitive- I'm not left wondering how things fit together as often as I do with stuff like Battlesystems. Things feel sturdy when they're put together- it helps cleaning all the edges to ensure a flush fit.
I feel a single core set is probably a good start for the average tabletop game. You probably would have to build and rebuild as characters travel through the dungeons but I don't see that as a huge issue (it's also going to save table space). Naturally the more you have the more elaborate your setup will be.
For human sized models the hallway size is fine. I can see narrower hallways being an issue if you tend to use big stuff in games like I do.
The biggest issue with the set is the lack of scenery pieces, which isn't a problem if you've backed any of the kickstarter campaigns. Backers will be swimming in options, and there's plenty of other places to source cheap scenery dressing.
One thing that bears mentioning is that Archon manufacturers all the plastics in house. I think this gives them a massive step up over a lot of the competition in terms of getting a lot of value for your pledge. I know I've mentioned it as well as a lot of others, but I'd love to see some sort of smaller retail options available for the Dungeons & Lasers system that includes some of those stretch goal scenery bits included to liven the rooms up a bit.
I'm going to play around with what I've got for a bit and have some new videos no what some of the rooms are like as well as what some of the stretch goal boxes have. Keep your eyes peeled as we'll be back with more!
