Area 51, 1995 Atari Games (20 From '95 Part 3)
Cool rail shooter combined with live-action footage, in lieu of digitized graphic captures of actors. Through 6 stages you enter the supposed site of aliens and/or UFOs in Nevada. Shoot crates, barrels, nuclear symbols and windows-- you can get weapon power-ups, larger clips, and smart bomb-like grenades! Enemies will pop up and start firing at you-- later levels will feature alien enemies which will take more shots to kill. Human enemies that chuck items at you or fire rocket launchers will require too many bullets to bring down, and it's best just to keep firing at their projectiles, since the screen will pan away from them eventually. As in most rail shooters of the time you must fire offscreen to refill your clip. Shooting the good guys will dock you one heart on your life meter. Letting your life meter run down to zero requires credits to continue. Various scenes allow you to ride a jeep, climb ladders, and ride on a chopper (all automatic, but still cool). In addition, there are secret areas you can access if you're a VERY good shot AND have a 2nd player shooting as well-- this often requires quick shooting at windows to unlock the bonus level. One secret trick is very easy to unlock, though: Shoot ONLY the first 3 good guys at the beginning level. You will now play the game as a "Kronn Hunter" of the aliens, and will see the game through infrared vision and have a different weapon. So easy to do in comparison to trying to access the secret levels. This cool, innovative game is best enjoyed with a friend, since trying to get the power-ups/bigger clips/grenades is tough to do while trying to take out the bad guys that pop up outta the woodwork!
