*my wrist size is 8", not 7.5" as I said in the video.

This Armatron model 40/8475BRGP was bought on Amazon.ca for $42 CAD (apx $31 USD) and for that price it's hard to argue with. The band and clasp are very similar to the Casio's in this price range but unlike those Casio's the case is metal, not plastic! Also, unlike those Casio's this watch is based on an LED display, not LCD.

You see, the Armatron Griffy (as it's sometimes called) is a classic throwback to the mid 1970's era of LED digital watches. This was before LCD digital watches made quartz the cheap option that it has become known as in the following decade of the 1980's. In fact being a new technology at the time they were actually a premium option and fairly expensive. Some common models like the Pulsar shown in the video sold in 1973 for $750 or apx $5,000 in today's money! That wasn't even the real gold model as those were twice that price! These really weren't cheap in the mid 70's but they were quickly replaced with the much more energy efficient LCD and eventually as economies of scale kicked in were nearly extinct by the cheap wave of digital watches in the following decade.

Luckily a few brands have kept the old LED watch alive. Bulova and Yema to name a few still offer "luxury" LED quartz watches. Honestly I say luxury but they're still relatively affordable at apx $300 USD. That's all fine and good but the Armatron comes in at under $40 USD and will give you a similar experience granted with a cheaper band and possibly thicker LED segments that don't quite emulate the originals.

Armatron was an American watch brand founded in 1975 when a clock company and electronics company merged and started to sell digital watches. While they had a few exceptions many of their models were basically just rip off's of the Japanese brands more popular models from the likes of Casio and Seiko. Their most famous model may be a calculator watch that was worn by Dr Emmett Brown in Back to the Future! Yes, while Marty wore a Casio calculator watch the Doc was wearing the American version! All that said I'm glad they're still around (probably under different ownership I would assume?) and making a few retro throwbacks at an affordable price like this.
