Armored Core VI: Coral Dawn - [ZGMF-X42S Destiny] Ch01 M02 - Destroy Artillery Installations
Saotome: "Well your ID is ready. From now on you're simply 'J'. The registration number is completely randomized but I've tricked the database a bit using the IDs you retrieved so that even if they try to validate it, they'll see you as a mercenary of little importance and not registered in the Arena."
Shinn: "Arena is that virtual simulator, isn't it?"
Saotome: "There's no doubt that with your skills you can climb to the top easily. But I'd advise against that. Arena rankers always tend to attract trouble, and there's no shortage of jealous people out there. Even on this burnt planet of no value, people still find reasons to fight and kill each other."
Shinn: "So where exactly is this? You said we could find clues about Kira here. But we can't go wandering around without information. Additionally, you never did explain why you're helping me. And you were certainly very quick to suggest Kira might be here without even giving me any real proof. What is it that you're really after on Rubicon 3?
Saotome: "I can see that I mistook you completely. Based on what little records I had, I had assumed you were just a fiery tempered young man only looking at your target. But I see now that you are so much more. I am sorry my boy. It is true I brought you here because me and my associates are looking for a significant mass of the Coral still on the planet."
Shinn: "I'm listening."
Saotome: "Right now we're on the Belius continent. It was a great place with many sprawling cities. Now mostly bereft of life except for a few survivors. They were early colonists who made their home here, had families and call themselves "Rubiconians". They oppose both the Planetary Closure Administration and the corporations. As I alluded to earlier, the Coral is a powerful resource, capable of generating unfathomable amounts of energy. But aside from being a power source, it has the ability to influence electronic devices, to the extent of even affecting computers, overriding their programing. A remarkable communication medium. Anybody who can remotely comprehend the patterns within Coral pulses could utterly break all the rules of conventional computing, and control everything."
Shinn: "And the corporations who have a lot of influence on this side of the universe, along with the enforcement group I encountered in this city, are all fighting over it."
Saotome: "The PCA are monitoring the few remaining traces and veins on Rubicon 3 and have been doing so since the Fires of Ibis over fifty years ago. The details are still unknown, but the Coral ignited all over the planet consuming it, and even spread through this star system. And yet, nobody is able to let go of this Pandora's Box."
Shinn: "Ok, I get it. The specific reasons may differ, but everyone including yourself is here for the Coral. Now tell me what makes you believe that my friend is here."
Saotome: "The Arena rankings. Take a look at them. With the few augmentations still left in you, you should be able to access a virtual interface visible only to your eyes."
Shinn: "Hmmm. I don't like it, but it really is convenient having everything before my eyes. ALLMIND...Arena Rankings....Wait. This is the Freedom!"
Saotome: "The uncanny similarities between that AC and your destroyed Mobile Suit surely couldn't be a coincidence. My guess is your friend was found, and he has assumed a false identity. I'm sure he didn't do it willingly, but Rubicon and this part of the galaxy are not kind places."
Shinn: "Raven. That's his new identity. This is great! We can track him!"
Saotome: "Indeed we can. But we must be careful. If he has a handler, essentially someone who has forced him into service, we cannot recklessly make contact even when we do find him."
Shinn: "I get it now. That's the real reason for the new ID in a world where no rules apply. There's nothing strange about mercenaries encountering, cooperating or fighting other mercenaries."
Saotome: "And given your friend's rank, I'm sure he already has countless enemies even before meeting any of them. The corporations and the PCA will most certainly not leave him alone. But he is still independent. Whoever has him, wants him to have a certain amount of freedom in conducting operations."
Shinn: "So what is the job? That's why you showed me this now isn't it? I couldn't help but notice that unusually small Destiny in the garage. You sure work fast, old man."
Saotome: "A mercenary needs to make a living, and it's the only way he'll get around. Open contract from Balam Industries. Destroy various artillery installations set up by a resistance group in this city. Don't worry, they're not completely helpless against you. And even after their destruction they'll return and set up more."
Shinn: "I suppose it would be foolish if I said, I wanted to minimize the loss of innocent lives?"
Saotome: "Foolish. But noble. Even so, let me say this: All who were truly innocent died fifty years ago."
