I have technically a unique history with this one. I had only rented the first Sarge's Heroes and didn't get it until years later. My exposure to this one was when my nephew brought it over along with a few other games during a sleep over and I was able to buy myself a copy from the store not long after. Which means it's extensively the first Army Men game I owned. Anyway, having watched the PS2 version, I semi prefer this one mostly because the weapons sound good where as they sound very "fake" in the PS2 version. I forget what the PS1 version is like. And I like about 90% of the tracks save for one.

Anyway, the game makes it a point to keep you in the "Real world" a lot more this time around. And yeah big improvement. In the first game, all weapons had limited ammo, including your starting gun unless you chose Easy on the PS1 version. Here your main gun is unlimited ammo. Although stage wise, one plastic world stage that's fun is the castle stages as it's a real unique setting. And yeah, Vikki makes her starting playability in the series here. And new weapons are here, with the shotgun being fairly fun but kinda limited in usage. And we counter a new character whom you're quick to become suspicious of.
