Arrival of MLR(Trip No. 32) to Lo Wu at University Station in 2018
The East Rail line was the very first railway in Hong Kong back in 1910. Steam locomotives and diesel locomotives were used respectively to carry passengers.
In 1982, the electric locomotives replaced diesel locomotives to carry passengers. Mid-Life Refurbishment Train(MLR) was the renewal version of the first generation electric locomotives.
With the complete of Sha Tin to Central Line(SCL) expansion, East Rail Line expands to Admiralty and MLRs were retired and replaced with R-trains.
Once the expansion of SCL was completed, the installation of Automatic Platform Gates (APGs) is started. The University station was one of the remaining stations which not yet install APGs due to its curving platform.
Currently most of the East Rail Line Station were installed with APGs & MSDs, the installation was announced to be completed in the 4th season of 2024.
