아버지인 타쿠마 사카자키가 창설한 극한류 가라테의 도장 사범. 유소년 시절부터 혹독한 단련을 거듭하여 '무적의 용'이라 불릴 정도의 실력자이다. 인내심이 강하고 착실하며 노력을 아끼지 않는 성격. 극한류 가라테의 문하생을 늘리고자 분투한다.

SNK 부흥의 발판이 된 용호의 권 시리즈의 주인공 캐릭터. 용호의 권 시리즈와 KOF 시리즈에는 매 작품 개근했으며 아랑전설 스페셜, SVC CHAOS, CVS 등 드림매치에도 자주 출장한다. 청년 말기의 료는 제2대 미스터 가라데로서 네오지오 배틀 컬리시엄, 무력 부리키 원, 아랑전설 와일드 앰비션에 출장했다. 이러한 경력으로 보아 쿠사나기 쿄, 테리 보가드와 함께 명실상부 SNK 격투게임을 대표하는 캐릭터라 할 수 있다.
다만 쿄나 테리와는 달리 한 시리즈의 주인공임에도 게이머들 사이의 인지도나 SNK의 푸쉬가 영 시원찮다. 시리즈가 오래 지속되었던 아랑전설이나 KOF의 주인공이었던 저 둘과는 다르게 용호의 권 시리즈가 빨리 종결된 데다, 료의 캐릭터 자체가 껄렁껄렁 유급생 쿄나 호탕한 스트리트 파이터인 테리와는 다르게 진지한 무도가 이미지에, 스트리트 파이터의 류처럼 도복이라는 겉모습 때문에 캐릭터의 개성이 좀 옅었다는 문제도 있었다. 용호의 권이 인기 절정이었던 시절에도 료보다는 로버트 가르시아가 더 인기 있었다.
하지만 오랜 시간이 흐른 후 전북익산, 빙주깨기, 패왕상후권을 쓸 수밖에 없다 같은 각종 밈이 발굴되면서 개그캐로서의 인기가 증가하는 중이다. 첫 등장시 용호의 권의 무대가 되는 사우스 타운이 70년대 말~80년대 초쯤이라 센스가 좀 B급 액션영화 삘이 많이 났었다. 특히 게다를 신고 오토바이를 타는 것은 용호의 권 발매 당시에는 그다지 문제 삼지 않았는데, 최근 들어 엄청난 개그로 여겨지고 있다.
아버지인 타쿠마가 서양인과 결혼하여 료와 유리를 낳았기 때문에 혼혈이다.(노란머리는 염색이 아니라 원래 노란 것이다) 하지만 용호의 권이 망해버려서 현재는 그냥 KOF에서 일본인처럼 행세하고 있다. 그래도 타쿠마, 료, 유리는 모두 서양식으로 표기한다. (카타카나이며 이름 표기에서 성(姓)-명(名) 이 아니라 명(名)-성(姓) 으로 표기) 이후 8살 쯔음에 미국으로 옮겨 갔다.
캐릭터 모델은 패트릭 스웨이지. 그런데 시대가 지날수록 점점 원판과는 달라져버린다.(특히 헤어스타일이.) 참고로 타쿠마는 고 최영의 선생이 모델이고, 로버트는 스티븐 시걸이 모델이다.
연표상, 테리 보가드보다 먼저 기스 하워드를 떡실신시킨 사나이다. 다만, 기스의 집사가 기지를 발휘한 덕분에 기스는 결정타를 피할 수 있었고, 이에 일본으로 건너가서 고무술을 수행하고 후에 결전 끝에 제프를 죽인다.
이후 아랑전설 시리즈에서는 뚜렷하게 행보가 나타나지 않다가 가로우 MOW에서 사범 대리까지 오른 마르코 로드리게스의 배경스토리를 통해 언급된다. 타쿠마에게서 공식적으로 극한류 총수를 물려받아 극한류를 이끌던 그에게 자만심넘치는 애송이인 마르코가 극한류를 박살내러 나타나자 몸소 상대해 그를 제압하여 그의 자만심을 깨우치게 한 후 마르코의 극한류 입문을 받아들여 제자로 육성하였다. 이후 료가 일선에서 물러나면서 빠르게 성장해 가장 뛰어난 극한류 무술가로 자리잡은 마르코에게 사범 대리 자리를 맡겼다. 아랑전설 스페셜의 히든 보스로 나오는 료는 플레이어가 본 환영이라는 설정으로 료는 아랑전설 시리즈 스토리에 공식적으로 등장한 적이 없다.
일본에서 돌아온 기스가 사우스 타운을 장악할 동안에 료나 극한류가 기스를 막으려는 모습이 공식 스토리에서 전혀 나오지 않았는데, 용호의 권은 아랑전설 이후에 발매한 프리퀄이기에 끼워맞춘 설정이라 아랑전설 시리즈에서 기스를 다시 막는 모습이 나오지 않은 걸로 추정.
Ryo Sakazaki
Ryo Sakazaki (リョウ・サカザキ Ryō Sakazaki?) is the main protagonist in Art of Fighting, forming the first half of the Japanese series's namesake as the The Invincible Dragon (無敵の龍 Muteki no Ryū?).His name is frequently written in katakana; earlier games used to write his name in kanji (坂崎 亮, Sakazaki Ryō).
In Gamest's 1997 Heroes Collection, Ryo was voted as the staff's twenty-fourth favorite character. He shared the spot with Sie Kensou and Toru Kurosawa, a character from Sega's Last Bronx. In the Neo Geo Freak's 1997 Volume 8 character poll, he was voted as the seventeenth favourite character with a total of 602 votes. And In a 2005 poll made by SNK-Playmore USA, he was voted as the fifth fan favorite character with a total of 193 votes. Both Nobuyuki Kuroki and Youichiro Soeda have Ryo as their favorite character from the Art of Fighting series.
Personality
Ryo is very serious about fighting and loyal to his friends and family. He has been given discipline through his Karate training by his father, Takuma. He treats Robert as his rival, but they are best friends. He is a little old fashioned and blunt, which sometimes alienates him from his trendier sister and stylish rival. He's also admits to not being very smart or talented but he believes that these are obstacles for him to overcome. Compared to Yuri and Robert's ideology on training, Ryo believes he can attain greatness in his art through hard work and experience. Having raised both himself and Yuri during their childhood, he struggles with his own wishes to protect his sister and his own wishes to see her grow up. He accepts her growing maturity with bittersweet acquiescence.
It has been implied that there is some romantic tension between him and King. He apparently thinks her to be a good friend though she may think more of him since he contributed to her brother's recovery in Art of Fighting 2. Their relationship is referred to various times during The King of Fighters series. In King of Fighters XIII's story mode, Yuri specifically mentions Ryo and King dating.
Fighting Style
Ryo was taught to be the "tiger" of Kyokugenryu Karate, ironic since his nickname calls him the dragon. In Buriki One, he seems to use ordinary Karate. His main strength relies on his fierce punching attacks, which is closer to his father's style. His (in)famous Tenchi Haou Ken (Heaven & Earth Supreme Sparkle Fist) is a good result of this type of style as such a punch often was able to automatically put opponents in stun upon impact, despite the low damage it did compared to other DM's (KOF XIII amps this up with a stronger version of this technique as his Neo Max).
His Art of Fighting and KOF incarnations tend to differ from one another such as his fighting stance. His Kohou (Tiger Roar) often either faces towards the screen (KOF) or the background (Art of Fighting). In KOF '96 onwards, his signature Ko'ou Ken (Tiger Sparkle Fist) turned into a close range attack afterwards though his Capcom crossovers beg to differ.
