캡콤에서 만든 2D 대전액션게임.

첫 작은 뱀파이어, 그 이후 뱀파이어 헌터와 뱀파이어 세이비어가 개발되었다.

그 외에는 스토리와는 상관없는 외전격 작품(실은 그냥 뱀파이어 세이비어 인터페이스 + 일부 캐릭터 추가 혹은 삭제)인 뱀파이어 헌터 2와 뱀파이어 세이비어 2, 그리고 시스템의 집대성인 뱀파이어 크로니클이 있다.

간판 시스템이라면 역시 체인 콤보와 가드 캔슬. 체인 콤보는 약한 기본기에서 강한 기본기로 순차적으로 연결되는 시스템으로, 이 당시에는 기껏 해봐야 약-중-강 3단계가 최고에 약 기본기 - 강 기본기 - 필살기 연계가 가능했고 딱히 특징 있는 시스템은 아니었던 것이 헌터에서부터 6단계로 정립됨과 함께 중간에 필살기로 캔슬이 불가능해지는 등의 변화가 가해지며 특징 있는 시스템으로 자리잡게 된다. 물론 처음부터 끝까지 기본기로 시작해 기본기로 끝나는 만큼 썰렁한 느낌도 있기에 이 시리즈 외에는 채택되지 못하고 체인에서 필살기 캔슬까지 이어지거나 특정 루트로만 기본기가 연결되는 식으로 변형되어 채택되었다.

제목처럼 주인공부터 인간이 아닌 뱀파이어 데미트리 막시모프이며,[4] 그 외 캐릭터들 또한 오직 몬스터들-캣우먼, 서큐버스, 미이라, 좀비, 인조인간, 반어인, 웨어울프 등-을 플레이어블 캐릭터로 내세웠다. 단순한 괴물들 뿐이 아니라 미형 캐릭터들은 미형 캐릭터다운 매력을 지녔고 미형이 아니더라도 각자 개성있는 모습으로 어필한 캐릭터도 있기에 캐릭터성에 있어서도 어느정도 성공적으로 먹혔다. 거기에 인간이 아닌 존재들이기에 기존 격투게임에서 보지 못한 각종 괴이한 성능의 캐릭터들도 게임의 색다른 재미를 이루는 데 큰 몫을 했다. 예를 들자면 기본 잡기조차 없고 무한 공중부유가 가능하며 땅에서까지 기본기가 솟아나는 아나카리스 같은 캐릭터가 대표적이다.

스토리 자체는 그 방대함에 비해서 뒷설정으로만 대부분 풀려서 많이 알려진게 없는데, 공식 스토리는 간단히 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1편 : 데미트리의 마계정복, 2편 : 뱀파이어 헌터 2명의 마족사냥, 3편 : 데미트리와 모리건의 마왕(제다) 토벌이다. 자세한 뒷설정과 스토리를 알고 싶으면 데미트리 막시모프 문서의 히스토리 오브 파이터즈 동영상을 보면 된다.

파격적인 시도였지만 애니메이션을 보는 듯한 캐릭터 그래픽이나 인간이 아니기에 가능한 유쾌한 기술, 기술에 당할때나 피니쉬마저도 캐릭터마다 일일히 다르게 만든 점이 플러스로 작용하여 나름대로 인기를 끌었다.

덕분에 캡콤은 이후 체인콤보 시스템을 더 손보고, 캐릭터 추가/혹은 기존 캐릭터의 색 변경 등의 추가요소를 넣어 뱀파이어 헌터, 그리고 뱀파이어 세이비어를 개발했다.

뱀파이어 세이비어부터는 격겜 역사상 유래없이 특이한 라이프제를 도입했다. 사실상 라운드가 없는거나 마찬가지인데 체력을 모두 소진시키면 게임이 잠시 정지되며 라이프 하나를 잃으며, 곧바로 다음 게임이 시작된다. 이 때 이긴 쪽의 체력게이지가 회복되지 않는다. 그렇게 해서 라이프 2개를 소모시키는 쪽이 승리. 그래서 화력이 강하고 템포가 빠른 게임 특성과 겹쳐 회전률이 무지막지하게 빨랐다.

매 시리즈마다 밸런스가 좋지 않은 편인데 95년에 나온 패치판 뱀파이어 헌터는 보스 캐릭터를 고를 수 있는 것 만으로도 큰 밸런스 붕괴를 일으켰으며 뱀파이어 세이비어에서는 밸런스가 수정됐다고 해도 큐비나 사스콰치, 자벨 같은 사기 캐릭터가 게임을 접수해버렸기 때문에 여전히 밸런스가 시궁창이다. 바렛타는 쓰긴 힘들지만 강제연결이 있어서 티어가 높은 편. 더군다나 시리즈마다 무한콤보가 있다는 것도 밸런스에 큰 영향을 끼쳤다.

CPS2의 비싼 기판 가격과 더불어 밸런스가 맞지 않은 편이고 초보자와 상급자의 격차가 심해서 초심자에게 어려운 시스템등으로 인해 흥행에 실패하고 세이비어가 마지막 작품이 되면서 캡콤은 아케이드 시장 철수위기를 겪게 되었으며 후속작이 나오지 않게 되었다.

현재 캡콤 측에서도 뱀파이어 후속작을 언젠가는 내겠다고 했지만 그 소식이 2009년이었는데 수년 넘게 2020-04-30 19:01:04-0900 지금까지도 깜깜 무소식이다. 낸다면 스트리트 파이터 4 마냥 3D그래픽으로 나와야될지도…

Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors

Darkstalkers, known in Japan as Vampire (ヴァンパイア, Vanpaia), is a series of 2D fighting games developed and published by Capcom, beginning with Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors (Vampire: The Night Warrior) in 1994. The series is set in a pastiche Gothic horror universe and features a highly stylized, cartoonish graphic style. It features characters based on either various kinds of monsters (the titular "darkstalkers") or their hunters, who are all engaging in combat against each other. Darkstalkers introduced many of the concepts used in later Capcom fighting games, including its first use of 16-bit color animation sprites and gameplay mechanics later employed in the Street Fighter Alpha and Marvel vs. Capcom series.

Besides video games, the Darkstalkers media franchise also includes an anime miniseries, an American cartoon TV series, a Canadian comic book series, and many books of various kinds and other media released only in Japan. Some individual characters (usually the series' mascots Morrigan and Felicia) appeared in the later Capcom games, as well as in a few crossover games released by other companies

Plot

The Darkstalkers games take place on the planet Earth that is in the process of merging with a realm known as Makai. The reason for this merger varies depending on the continuity, but a continuing theme is that the union of realms brings the arrival of the Darkstalkers to the human world, the term being a catch-all for the various creatures of legend. The greatest of these supernatural creatures, and the greatest among those who hunt them, meet in battle to determine who will rule the night.

In the original game and the sequel, Vampire Hunter (Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge), an alien overlord named Pyron returns to Earth after being away for many years. His quest to conquer the world using an army of robots brings the Darkstalkers out of hiding to oppose his rule over humanity and the supernatural. A second sequel, Vampire Savior (Darkstalkers 3), saw the debut of Jedah, previously one of the nobles of Makai, who decides that the only way to save the realm is to take control of it by force. Accordingly, he lures the Darkstalkers into a trap to use their collective souls to remake the realm and control both humanity and the supernatural

Characters

Darkstalkers characters are either based on various iconic literary and cinematic monsters, or inspired by international mythology and fairy tales. The 1997 anime miniseries Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge, which was based on the first two titles, was faithful to the characters' in-game personalities. The 1995 American-produced cartoon series, simply titled Darkstalkers, dropped the backstory of the games altogether in favor of a standard good-versus-evil plot, altering certain characters' storylines in the process.
