Throughout history, the Templars have fought to bring order to mankind using powerful ancient artifacts, but the Assassin's Order has opposed them to protect individual freedoms. After centuries of conflict, the Templars allied with the Catholic Church and used the 15th century Spanish Inquisition to hunt the Assassin's down, claiming they were heretics. But one Assassin, Aguilar de Nerha hid the powerful artifact they were seeking.

Despite the lost artifact, the Templars grew powerful and rebranded themselves in the 21st century as the Abstergo Foundation. Headed by Alan Rikkin, the foundation secretly worked toward controlling the world, developing the Animus Project, a machine which unlocks the genetic memories of a person's ancestors. They have hunted down the Assassin's ancestors and used the Animus to learn the Order's secrets. And finally, after years of searching, they've found Aguilar's descendent: Callum Lynch, an aimless criminal on death row.

Led to his execution, Callum instead woke up in Abstergo Industries. Now part of the Animus Project, the Templars are forcing him to relive Aguilar's memories but the Bleeding Effect starts to distort his sense of reality. As Callum learns more, he’ll gain the skills and knowledge of his Assassin heritage, continue the age-old war against the Templars, and hopefully make us forget about Unity.
