Way back in 2007ish, inspired by fan reaction to Shadow of the Colossus protagonist, Wander and his trusty steed, Agro, Team ICO began their third title, Project Trico, about a boy and his catbirdthing. After 2 years of teases, they wowed E3 2009 with The Last Guardian... then disappeared again until Tokyo Game Show 2010 promising a 2011 holiday release date.
Psych! When unexpected bugs arose, creator Fumito Ueda and Sony butt heads. A rumored demo on the Ico and Shadows of the Colossus Collection was quickly squashed. Sony then moved the game to PS4 and Ueda quit, becoming a consultant to honor his contract kinda. Fans assumed Trico was cancelled. Sony enlisted its other studios to lend a hand but the trademark for the Last Guardian expired in 2012 and the game became an industry joke for looming cancellation. Even Sony officials couldn't agree if the game was active, on hiatus, or caught in a dumpster fire.
Just as the internet moved on, Sony jumpstarted The Last Guardian hype machine again at E3 2015. Showcasing improved, but old, footage now for the PS4, fans were skeptical. An October 2016 release was optimistically announced then, not surprisingly, delayed until December. Will The Last Guardian live up to the hype, or should we have uploaded Minecraft LORE instead?
