For some reason, I’m always really interested in games that release, make a splash, but then are almost instantly completely forgotten. To me, one of those games is Astral Chain - I don't know that I've heard anyone talk about this game in years, which is crazy because the pedigree behind Astral Chain is legit. The game was developed by Platinum Games and it was published by Nintendo.

Like many of their other games, the main draw of Astral Chain is that certain almost indescribable brand of highly engaging combat that Platinum’s able to pull off. If you’ve played games like Nier Automata or Bayonetta, you know what I’m talking about.

But Astral Chain has a weird twist that sets it apart - you don’t just fight as the main character. You also have control of these interdimensional beings called legions. They're really the main gimmick of this game, and they’re those things that you keep on the end of a chain.

When you send them out, they can kind of just fight on their own. But you can also take control of them to pull off special moves. Or you can move them around and do things like wrap up enemies or use them to get to hard to reach areas.

It looks more complicated than it actually is - It’s really a fun combat system, and that’s good because the rest of the game is just okay. The story starts off strong, and has a few good surprises, but otherwise it’s nothing too special. And the parts of the game that aren’t combat, like the investigation sections, are really slow and, to me, they’re uninteresting.

Still, I’m really glad I finally got around to playing Astral Chain, because unless it sees a random resurgence, I think it will more than likely, fade away to complete obscurity. I’m not really sure why this game has been so quickly forgotten, maybe it’s because it is a New IP locked on a console that's not exactly known for this type of game. Or maybe the game just doesn’t have much appeal outside of people who just like Platinum games? Maybe it’s just the fact that the game’s good, but not great. I don’t know, but if you have any ideas, let me know.
