Eastern Front (1941) was the most advanced wargame of its time, with features like smooth map scrolling, terrain effects, simulated supply lines, unit morale and fatigue, AI pondering, and the dreaded effects of a Russian winter.

To be honest, though, all that, as well as the historical context and quite possibly even the whole "war" concept, went over my head back when I first played. I saw a bunch of abstract shapes with funny names you could move around an unfamiliar map that would bump into other abstract shapes and make neat noises, and sometimes move across different abstract shapes with funny names (the cities) that would then change color. Still, I suppose it says something about the game that it could be reasonably playable and entertaining even if you had no idea what you were doing?
