Atari 800 Game: Pitfall II The Lost Caverns - Adventurer's Edition (1984 Activision)
36A Side-Scrolling/Platform/Run 'N Jump game where you are the adventurer, the world's most famous explorer and fortune hunter extraordinaire named Pitfall Harry. Go through lost forests and the caves and collect treasures for points.
The Atari 800 and 5200 versions (known as the Adventurer's Edition) has new levels that is harder than the initials levels (where rest of the home ports only have). This version has new enemies rabid bats the fly in more erratic patterns and reverse direction, frogs that traverse the horizontal screen that follow Harry rather than simply jumping over the pit, fire ants, and piranha fish which both move very fast. Rabid bats can be avoided by jumping over and slipping under them. Fire ants must be avoided by jumping over them for three times that contain them in that part of the level. You can avoid piranha fish by any direction. Ladders are stretched by bottom all the way to the top but they cover great distances without connecting to some platforms where you must find another way to reach them. Some gold bars are guarded by dangerous creatures where you must avoid them in order to collect the treasures. There are four items you must collect in order to beat the game and they are a rope, a pot, and a trumpet . After you collect these three items, they are transferred to a certain platform where phrase "CHARMING THE GOLDEN ROPE IS PITFALL HARRY'S ONLY HOPE" appears on the bottom of the screen. You will then see a snake charmer playing the trumpet. Once you touch the snake charmer, the rope rises up from the pot allowing Harry to reach the ground level and the game is won and beaten.
Off all the home ports of Pitfall II, this and the Atari 5200 versions are the best ones. The IBM PC dos version has the best graphics of any home version.
