Atari Lynx Review (Models 1 and 2)
118In an age when Nintendo was dominating the portable video game market, Atari decided that they wanted in on some of the action! Unfortunately for Atari, the fact that the Lynx was huge and had only a fraction of the number of games that the Game Boy had, left it in its competitors dust.
The one cool thing to note about the Lynx though is that despite its horrendous size, it was the first ever portable console to have a colour screen! The Atari Lynx also has many other features which were new at the time, and some of which have still never been implemented by any other portable console. And like many consoles, the Atari Lynx did eventually undergo a revision which made it more compact and easier to hold, although it was still no match from the almighty Game Boy.
In this video we will be looking at the differences between the first and and second models of the Atari Lynx, as well as examining the various cartridge designs and going over all of the console's major features. The most interesting feature of the console is definitely the ability to flip the screen upside down, which allows you to rotate the console and have the D-Pad on the right side of the screen and the A and B buttons on the left side. Other notable features include a backlit screen and better graphics than the original Game Boy had. Unfortunately the Lynx requires 6 AA batteries to play, although there is an official AC adapter that can be used to power the console instead.
Overall the Atari Lynx is a very bizarre yet cool portable console. There are some decent games for it too if you can find them, although the library is nothing compared to the Game Boy's or even Game Gear's
