AV1 video codec for YouTube
In this video I’m doing some AV1 encoding with DaVinci Resolve and the Nvidia NVENC encoder using the RTX 4070. I'm using the Studio version of Resolve.
I’m testing various bitrates and also doing speed tests using the Nvidia RTX 4070 and DaVinci Resolve. This is part 1 of a 7 part test.
These tests are to see what are the best AV1 settings for YouTube. Obviously, best quality AV1 and best bitrate for AV1 encoding and exporting is going to be on a case by case basis and is dependent on the type of video content that you are exporting/encoding from and the complexity of the source video.
In this example I'm using high quality BlackMagic BRAW video files as my starting point. These files are of very high quality and very high resolutions such as 6K, 8K and 12K.
All the video files in this video are the copyright and property of BlackMagic Design.
When using well shot and high quality source files, these are easier to encode. Also, due to the bokeh and blur in these shots, there's not so much sharp fine line detail, which also helps when encoding to AV1 to keep the file size down. In fact, these characteristics will also help exporting and encoding to any codec, especially inter-frame codecs.
While these AV1 video encodes are being used to upload to YouTube, you can of course use the AV1 video codec for any kind of video delivery scenario or target output.
It’s basically impossible to compare the differences in the different bitrates for these types of tests within one video upload. The reason being is that once you add the different bitrate encodings to a single video for uploading to YouTube. Each of the different video files for each of the different bitrates will be re-encoded again for the single upload file.
This will obviously introduce more concatenation, basically, reducing the quality further by adding another level of destructive encoding on top of an encode that has already gone through a destructive encode. This results in more quality loss because one inter-frame encoding is being encoded again to another inter-frame encoding. Inter-frame encoding, or inter-frame codec, being the type of codec that uses an IBP frame structure consisting of intra-frames, bidirectional frames and predictive frames. Also know as long GOP, with GOP meaning Group Of Pictures.
So the only way to really compare these different bitrates for the various AV1 encodes that I have done. Is to the view the different AV1 bitrate clips individually. This is why I have uploaded each bitrate output as an individual YouTube video, hence the 7 parts to this test. I have also provided all the clips as downloads, which is even better for judging the quality of each of the AV1 video files and their bitrates.
