Final Cut Pro for iPad has one MASSIVE problem
33Final Cut Pro for iPad can’t directly edit video files on external storage such as USB or Thunderbolt SSD drives (Check Out DaVinci Resolve for iPad instead and it's free).
So if you were thinking about buying into the subscription options for Apple's Final Cut Pro for iPad, you may want to think twice.
Final Cut Pro on iPad can not edit your video files directly from an external SSD or other storage drive.
Yes, you can transfer your video files, or any other compatible media files such as pictures etc. to the internal storage of your iPad. However, and as pointed out in this video, there are a number of very serious problems doing this as far as the internal storage of your iPad is concerned.
I'm using an M2 iPad Pro and have a number of external USB and external Thunderbolt SSD drives that I use for other apps on my iPad Pro. But I can't use any of these external drives with Final Cut Pro on my M2 iPad Pro or my M1 iPad Pro, without transferring the files to the iPads first.
What makes this even worse is that DaVinci Resolve for iPad can edit directly from external drives, even in the free version of DaVinci Resolve for iPad. Furthermore, Resolve on iPad is simply a way better video editing app for iPad compared to FCP for iPad.
The real big problem here is when you are going to be using ProRes video files with Final Cut Pro for iPad. I use anything up to 8K resolution for my ProRes files, with most of my ProRes files being 4K 60FPS ProRes 422 HQ.
These ProRes files are large files and a typical edit of mine using these files is way bigger than the storage of my iPad. With DaVinci Resolve on iPad this is not a problem as I can edit the files directly from my external video media drives.
Anyway, I hope this video has been useful to someone out there. Now I'm not saying don't buy Final Cut Pro for iPad, full stop. I'm just suggesting that you don't go running in head first and you should take a look at the limitations first. Or, maybe do what I done and just subscribe to the one month subscription of Final Cut Pro for iPad and use your first month to check it out properly and you can cancel your subscription if it's not for you.
From my understanding the 12 month subscription allows you to cancel and get a refund if done within the first months. So basically a one month trial. However, paying for the one month subscription may be easier as you just cancel your subscription if it's not for you, or switch to a 12 months subscription after your first month if you like Final Cut Pro no iPad.
