Azure Dreams for the Game Boy Color is an 8-bit adaptation of the original Playstation game. The game revolves around a young man named Koh/Kou who has become of age and can now journey through the magical monster tower in the town of Monsbaiya to gain riches and become prosperous, but it's filled with many dangers. Koh/Kou not only goes to improve his life and his family's life, but to go in search of his father, Guy, who disappeared many years ago when he was just a boy. In order for Koh/Kou to succeed, he must become a successful "Monster Tamer" and understand the nature of the tower. The general story is the same in both games, though the GBC game has alternate sub-plots.

It easily improves on the monster mechanics and adds many new monsters to tame and also adds new characters to expand the story, but it sacrificed most of the town building elements and the love scenarios between different girls; One of the main qualities that attracted people to the game in the first place. This also means that the number of important females present in the game was greatly reduced, with the game only keeping those who were "central" to the story (like Nico and Selfi) and relegating Fur's role in the game. The mini-games were also removed. This game is decent in its own right and is good to play if you want the whole story behind Azure Dreams, but most will tell you that the Playstation game is better.

The game is a rogue-like in many senses and possesses characteristics that would seem rather unorthodox and in a word, "strange", to casual RPG gamers. The bulk of the game (The Tower) consists of many randomly generated floors filled with loads of treasure, traps, and enemies. Rogue-likes (or RRPGs) are typically known for their imposing nature and somewhat steep challenge curve, and Azure Dreams is no exception. The game will always reset the human character's level to one upon entering the tower and you can only bring in a handful of items for survival, but can leave the tower with more.

The way to progress further is through finding better equipment and training your monsters or "Familiars" (with a monster collar). Monsters are not effected by the magic of the tower and won't drop in level upon entering. While Koh/Kou can get stronger through strengthening his equipment, the monsters are your first line of defense. There are many variables to consider, various monster characteristics, abilities, and other things within the game that would take too long to discuss here. On that note, I'll say this: Enjoy.

SPECIAL NOTE: This video was editied and combines the colors and output of the GameCube's Game Boy Player (meaning the colors are comparable to the GBC and the sound is higher quality than the SNES) but with the Super Game Boy's special background, so you could see the cool theme of the SGB and get the nice colors of the GBC. This is NOT a theme of the Game Boy Player and the Super Game Boy does NOT display the colors present in game. It actually defaults to a mostly red, black and orange motif. I did it this way so it would look nice.
