Back 4 Blood Gameplay and Impressions | Better Than Left 4 Dead
Back 4 Blood launches in just over two months, but four of us from the RPS treehouse recently got to play a few hours of the spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead. So, while you’re watching a chunk of Back 4 Blood gameplay, you’ll get to hear the thoughts of Alice Bell (our Left 4 Dead aficianado), Ed Thorn (our Back 4 Blood weapons expert), and Katharine Castle (the only member of Team RPS that had a go on the Back 4 Blood PvP mode). It’s a bumper Back 4 Blood impressions video!

Kicking off this Back 4 Blood preview vid, Alice joins Colm to talk about how Turtle Rock Studios’ new game compares to both Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2. If you’re a fan of those games and you’re looking for a summary: yes, it’s better than Left 4 Dead. At least it’s shaping up to be. The Back 4 Blood campaign features a few new bits and bobs that Alice was impressed with – The Back 4 Blood cards system is pretty cool – but she was pleased that it still has all the important features. Ya know… tons of zombies, lovely set-pieces, and tons of zombies. The Back 4 Blood co-op experience transported her back to her teenage years.
Ed’s up after Alice to talk about the Back 4 Blood weapons. He also put a decent amount of time into Left 4 Dead back in the day, and he thinks the shotguns, rifles and pistols here trump everything from the past. As you can see in this gameplay of the Back 4 Blood beta, Ed also took a liking to some explosives dotted about the environment, too. To be fair, his fellow Back 4 Blood cleaners were happy he had a nose that could sniff out a propane tank.
While Colm, Alice and Ed all got to play some of the Back 4 Blood campaign, Katharine was the only one of us that got to play some Back 4 Blood PvP, as well as some Back 4 Blood PvE. This 4v4 mode does allow you to play as the Back 4 Blood ridden, as well as the regular human characters from campaign, but the maps didn't really favour the monsters, from what Katharine saw. The Back 4 Blood card system is in full effect in the competitive multiplayer, and there is definitely some potential there, but Katharine wasn't completely taken by what she saw. She was more a fan of teaming up with the rest of us in the Back 4 Blood campaign.
This Back 4 Blood preview is based on the Back 4 Blood beta build that we got to play. And, yes, while this is obviously the Back 4 Blood PC version, if you're wondering what either the Back 4 Blood PS5 version or the Back 4 Blood Xbox version will be like, you can still apply everything said in this video. It goes without saying that this isn't a Back 4 Blood review: we'll be giving our final verdict on the game much closer to launch. But, we liked what we saw. Here's hoping the final game sticks the landing.
