Backbone | Full Game Playthrough (No Commentary)
29Playing through the entirety of Backbone where you control Howard Lotor, a raccoon detective in dystopian Vancouver that starts out with investigating an unfaithful husband only to find the case is much bigger than he thought.
With the full game I still find the worldbuilding, art style, and music (at least when the scene isn't silent) to be great, but there's several notable flaws that weaken the game considerably. First, it feels somewhat like a bait and switch from the Prologue which utilized stealth and at least some attempt at puzzles for a code but after the first act both are almost entirely abandoned. There's nothing wrong with a more narrative type game though my experience with the demo versus the full game has me admit that my expectations were rather different. Also, the bulk of the game is in the first two acts whereas the remaining three acts are very short, leading me to think there was more intending to be implemented but that there were constraints of some sort. I'm not entirely a fan of the sudden story shift at the end of the third act as it abandons the investigative element entirely - I wanted to play as a raccoon detective solving some cases, damnit! - and having that development occur because Howard ignored the "don't touch anything" comment mentioned five seconds before is a bit annoying. There also doesn't appear to be more than one ending.
When you tack on the $25 price tag I really cannot recommend the game in its current state. I overall enjoyed the game despite its flaws but there is more bang for your buck with other games. I certainly wish the developers the best with their next game, whether it's a sequel to Backbone or something new.
