We finally find another human ship on the planet, and while we can't use the mech in the hanger, we do get a much more straightforward set of objectives and puzzles, possibly benefitting from the plain english signs above the doors. I honestly enjoy most of this game's combat and item balancing, as it really encourages using your stronger ammo in what might feel like standard encounters. This makes each health and ammo pickup feel substantial, and it largely comes not from the enemy variety, but from each individual enemy being a well-crafted challenge that fit nicely together.
Unreal was released by Epic Games in 1998, after years of development that gave rise to one of the most important games in video game history. The Unreal Engine developed for this game has continued to have successors that are at the core of so many modern video games that the engine has become more famous than its origin. While Unreal has sometimes been lost in the shuffle of 1998's legendary historical game releases, it may well have actually been the most important release of that year.
