"What it feels like to be criticized in the modern day, even though you swear you are trying your best, you just are unable to please anybody anymore..." is the 3rd placed entry of the predecessor to QLDC (aka the Bad Level Design Contest) hosted by Romhack Races. The concept? Make the most unintuitive battle system possible.

As by the rules, you can only have 4 sublevels. But to make an RPG like this you'll want multiple so you can have multiple layouts... right? Well, kinda. Here's how I categorize the levels in the main stage.

ENCOUNTER CUTSCENE:
This is self explanatory. This appears to just be a normal test level, until the background scrolls in a profile picture of some kind. Then text appears on the bottom, basically telling Mario to end his life. "The Plumber" replies that he sucks, and the angry person says that he is mistaken. The fight begins a few seconds after all the plot is explained.

BATTLE SYSTEM (Menu Selection)
This is how this plays out. The coin represents the "attack" button, while the glitched tile represents the "Health Item". One of each spawns in this giant area filled with random platforms. Both can be found randomly on 8 different spots, on opposite sides of the screen. As you might be able to tell, RNG plays a huge factor in this battle.

If you run out of time, instead of being instantly killed, you instead take a random amount of damage and you lose your turn in the battle (yes this is a real time battle system like Final Fantasy V).

If you fall, you also lose health and plummet to the bottom of the screen. These two methods are the only way of being dealt damage in this mode of gameplay.

By collecting the "attack" button, you deal a random amount of damage to the boss. Sometimes, the boss only deals 3 hits. Other times, it can reach up to 12 hits. Feels bad? ...that's the point.

You will know the boss is almost dead when the music changes from "Nether Animal" (from Unreal Tournament 99) to "Coup de Grace" (from Romancing Saga).

BATTLE SYSTEM (Boss Attack)
The boss will put you in a box in the stage "Outrageous" from Super Mario World, and it's your job to survive for 21 SMW seconds. This phase is all about RNG, varying to 2 different groups of enemies that can be spawned as well as 5 different environments. These groups of enemies spawn at a cycle, but which enemy spawns first is random. If you take into consideration that there are 8 enemies that can be spawned, and 5 different environments you can activate, that will lead to the total of about 80 ways this room can play out.

These 5 environments range from normal, water, icy floor, very icy floor, and icy floor but the player is in his ducking frame.

These enemies will take a random amount of health until you are dead as you reach 0000 HP. Unless you are after those health pickups in the previous screen, you do not wanna take too much damage in this part of the battle.

You must wait until the boss is done attacking you before you return to the menu level, where you repeat the cycle until the boss is defeated.

VICTORY SCREEN
The boss gives one last remark that you cheated, and you touch the goal tape. Victory is yours! Embrace it.
