Balance in Singleplayer Games
When we talk about Game Balance we're often talking about multiplayer games, right? We're talking about games where human players fight against other human players. Because in those sorts of games, both sides need to have as close to a fair fight as possible. Not TOO fair, mind you, you need character and ability diversity for the game to stay fun. Games where both players have the exact same moveset and capabilities tend to be much more fair than games with large character pools, but they get stale a lot faster.
But developers try to make their games as fair as possible for players, because an unbalanced game isn't fun, especially for the player who's losing. So developers try, with varying levels of success, to make their multiplayer games as balanced as possible.
But nobody seems to ever talk about balance in single player games. Let's take a look at the effects overpowered items, abilities and combos can have on a game where nobody is on the receiving end of the imbalance.
