Part 5. I very much enjoyed the original Baldur's Gate and after starting up the sequel I wasn't sure I was going to like this one as much. I accidentally chose the necromancer and just rolled with it. Turns out it was a freaking great choice. You get a little summon buddy which grabs a ton of agro from you. You start out with some basic spells, but the necromancer gets pretty darn powerful by the end of the game. Not sure how viable he is in NG+. What's great in this game is that there are quite a few side quests and side areas you can visit and re-visit to get more loot. The loot is pletniful and so is the money. The game seems to also borrow a bit more from traditional D&D, but also keeps some of the stuff from the original, like wearing heavy armor and still being able to cast. Levels come pretty fast and you have quite a variety in how you can build your character. I went for a more melee approach early on and eventually moved over to being a ranged caster with some later super powerful spells. It may not be lightning ball powerful but the Flame Arrows and the Shadow Spray annihilate just about everything. I enjoyed using the touch spells, I felt near unkillable most of the time spamming Vampiric Touch. Not only that my mana pool was so large it rarely ever fully depleted. I rarely, if ever, needed potions they were basically just free money. The great part is that there are character specific side quests that you can take on and they greatly enhance your player. The upgrade system is also pretty cool but also really complicated. You get gems and you can infuse those into your gear and power them up to crazy levels. It's insanely expensive, but fortunately you have a skill which can lower prices drastically. You can also fuse gems into gear to also give discounts in the workshop. It's pretty wild what you can do, but there are clear skills that will benefit you more than others. You could easily take a ranged Necromancer and turn them into a melee god. The game is also a lot longer than the first as well, which isn't a bad thing if you are having a blast. The game still expects you to farm chests for the best loot and that can get tedious after a while of reloading for hours. The levels themselves are varied and a ton of fun to explore, with many dungeons having optional paths and secrets for more great loot. There are also a ton of different kinds of enemies some even making a return from the original Dark Alliance. The bosses are cool, albeit we made short work of most of them. The story picks up right after the original so we just get more continuation and if you are a busy body you could even stumble across the original heroes in a dungeon basement. There is no gauntlet type challenge in this game, which is a little disappointing, but you do get Drizzt unlocked after you beat the game. Overall, I really like my time spent with this game. It scratched an itch and was pretty darn fun. Enjoy my blind playthrough.
