Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance PS2 playthrough on Hard Part 11 Onyx Tower and the final boss
This is my playthrough of the game titled Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance that has all the elements of a hack and slash except for one part: on the highest difficulty, it changes to a strategic hack and slash for tentative people. Still, a great and entertaining game.
This is the very final stretch of the game. The last boss is seemingly challenging (one hit deaths are good enough to keep the player at bay) but as you will see, it took me just several attempts to see through her pattern, and with the special sword it was even easier. Surprisingly, I think that the most difficult boss in the game is Karne who is technically just a sub-boss. At the point of the game you must fight him, on the highest difficulty level, you are pretty underpowered to beat him (even in terms of gold needed for potions). He has lots of hp, uses teleportation, deals a lot of damage, so it is a really long fight. It took me much longer to kill Karne than to finish off Eldrith.
Still, this game on the highest difficulty is a fair challenge. It turns out to be a block/hit/block combo throughout the whole game (at least for the dwarf character) but to some extent you can say that it simulates an actual fight. Usually, in hack'n'slash games you go for a head on collission (and don't even have a block or parry mechanic). Here, you may say that each enemy becomes an individual challenge rather than just a small part of a huge mass.
The only disadvantage I really need to point out is the downhill quality of the game as such. At the beginning, you have side-quests, jumping mechanics, simple puzzles. In next chapters, all of that is gone, there is a scarce group of NPCs you can talk to, and at some point you realize that the triangle button (used for jumping) is completely obsolete. The growth system of your character sometimes does not make any difference. On the highest difficulty level, you purchase the best armor possible in a particular chapter. Excited, you move on with the killing spree... just to be killed within seconds by a simple combo from a goon. Very disappointing. Still, I think this is a great piece in my PS2 collection and I can't wait to find the time to play through the last difficulty level and then through BGDA 2, which I have for Xbox Classic.
This is the PS2 version of the game recorded from the original system (hence the resolution, no upscaler used) with an old Avermedia Game Capture HD, which is a fantastic device for grabbing footage from older consoles.
