Barry McGuigan's World Championship Boxing - C64 Sundays Rank 64
This C64 Sunday we play Barry McGuigan World Championship Boxing the game ranked 64 in our top 100 c64 games as ranked by Lemon 64 on August 31st 2014.
Published by Activision in 1985, is a boxing game with a little more depth in some places than most boxing games of the day. There is actually training involved. In between fights you get to determine how much of what kind of training you do and this effects your stats for the next fight. Choose poorly and you'll have a hard time keeping up with your opponent. However if you really need to you can grind against the person one rank below you in the standing.
For all this adds to the game you can't control your boxers movement. They move left and right on their own based on your chosen style and reacting to your opponent. If you can manage to get them against the ropes though you can inflict massive damage to their endurance, the one stat that keeps you on your feet.
But be sure to train up your other stats because they decrease as the fight goes on and sometimes even if you are winning based on endurance and stamina your lack of strength will mean that you just aren't landing the blows you need to and eventually will be knocked out.
Unfortunately there is no save feature to keep your boxers career going once you turn the game off which is really a pity!
The game was programmed by Troy Lyndon (Mr. Do!, GBA Championship Basketball - Two-on-Two), with music by John A. Fitzpatrick (Bruce Lee, Zorro, Legend of the Amazon Women etc) and graphics by Doug Barnett.
