Batman The Animated Series Game Boy playthrough redo
This redo had been a long time coming and it was about time I did it since my original version is a bit trash. But now the video quality is better and no audio issues anymore.
So, this game is based upon the Animated Series, and it was developed by Konami. It vastly differs from the Super Nintendo game and it's a challenging but competently made game, basically they had the time to polish up on making games for the system after doing the TMNT games for it, but I digress. To note the power ups, the hearts refill three blocks of health, and the batarang icons give you five each but you can only have a maximum of nine. The first stage/episode pits us against the Joker as we navigate the streets, partially the sewer and then a factory leading to rooftops to take care of the bomb processing and delivery he's doing involving teddy bears. It's a simple first level, and the boss is one of the easiest to tangle with in the game, considering he is the first boss. There is sort of a set pattern so you can predict where he'll end up if you memorize it.
Episode 2 involves Mr. Freeze and Scarecrow semi teaming up together, and we briefly switch to Robin to tackle Scarecrow, the only boss Robin is allowed to defeat. This fight is fairly simple since his gas balloons bounce on a set pattern effectively, and if you do it right you can stun lock him as he misses you with his gas/flame thrower. But then Mr. Freeze's area is real tough, his goons fire freeze blasts in a two round burst, and you have to rapidly hit the attack button to break free fast or else you'll take continuous damage till you die. And the first segment is tricky due to the ice ball turrets that bounce off the floor and ceiling until they hit some form of wall.
After that you have to carefully navigate the rest of the stage, dodging ice chunk throwers till the last bit before Mr. Freeze's room, where you have to punch at least one or more chunks before ducking the last one and then getting through. You want maximum health when you get to him since he is effectively a wall for a lot of players. The best strategy I learned is to use all nine batarangs on him up close so he doesn't bounce back and forth across the room, forcing you to have to contend with the three round burst ice turrets that bounce around the room as you go back and forth. Hitting him with all nine means you only have to punch him three times after that, which makes it a lot easier, but timing has to be precise. But with full health you have a little wiggle room. After that, he is essentially the hardest boss in the entire game. So it's smoother sailing from here.
Next episode we deal with involves Harvey Dent having been kidnapped by Poison Ivy, which tells us roughly when in the series this takes place. And yeah Scarecrow uses his better mask but anyway. Turns out Catwoman was also semi involved, but was really only in it for Batman to arrive, and she is effectively an even match for Batman in the game since she has roughly similar agility and combat skills so she is a bit tricky, and due to the chase bit, she takes more of a beating than any of the other bosses as a whole since you have to punch her as no batarangs are available for her segment. After either leaving her alone or cuffing her, we venture into Ivy's green house of sorts and it is a tricky area to navigate, multiple ways to take damage, but her boss fight is essentially the easiest, even easier than Scarecrow since you really don't wanna use batarangs on the beast, just go in for the punch and time your jumps correctly and you'll have it locked in a pattern.
After that, we have episode 4, the last true levels of the game. Penguin and Riddler team up, and we have to get inside quickly to avoid falling bombs, and we enter a Riddler maze. You can get lost if you keep hitting the wrong question marks to open the path, but just follow the route I take and you head straight for the room where Riddler and Penguin await. The VR fight against Riddler is a little bit tricky, but still not the hardest fight in the game. After he's down, we take control of Robin briefly to chase after Penguin and get aboard his flying craft. But Batman takes charge and this is a tough segment to get through due to one thing, the infinite spawning mechanical birds that chase after you. You're bound to take some hits due to where they spawn from, but after that is the fight against Penguin and he is only hard if you don't follow a precise pattern, since as you can see it's easy to dodge his shots and bombs if you do it just so, and he ever aims at you like Freeze does. If he did it would've been a LOT harder. But then he's down, and like some other comic games, it fakes you out thinking it's over, only for technically a brief to be continued segment.
Joker's back and he sicks after us a boss that feels like it belongs in a Sonic game due to how you have to wait for the optimal opening, avoiding attacks in order to strike effectively. That's that.
