Battle Blaze (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A complete playthrough of American Sammy's 1993 Super NES fighting game, Battle Blaze.
This really seems like it had some potential, but with so few moves per character (typically 3 or 4), graphics that despite being artfully rendered look like slight upgrades of sprites from the original Golden Axe game (which would be fine four years earlier on a Sega Genesis, but not so much here), no choice of character for the story mode, and only 5 different characters, Battle Blaze is pretty underwhelming. It's not bad at all, but it's pretty perfunctory, and feels like it was only finished to the point where the developers could say good enough.
It's too bad, I tend to be a fan of Sammy's work, but this really isn't much more than a slightly improved reskin of their 1992 Genesis game Fighting Masters... except that the majority of the roster was left on the cutting room floor. It's a pretty cringe-worthy thought, though, to realize that this is an arcade port of a then fairly recent game. As much as I like 90s Sammy games, this one wasn't a prime example of what made them good.
The music is pretty nice, though!
