Apparently, mashing start when the thinking icon is on screen stalls the CPU and forces it to make bad moves. Dumbest thing I've ever found. This kinda hurts my thumb and wrist so... yeah, not improving this.

There's more variability in possible moves in 3D (or maybe my hands just can't keep up with the CPU deadlocks), but the best scenario seems to be Pawn and Castle CPU movements. There might be a more optimal set of moves, haven't tested much.
