An English-subtitled playthrough of Hudson Soft's 1994 FMV fighting game for the NEC PC-FX, Battle Heat!

Played through as Kai on the hard difficulty level.

Battle Heat! is a pretty awesome game - I really enjoyed playing this one. Well, let me correct that. As a game, it's not anything that spectacular. What really makes it is the animation - the character designs were all done by Junichi Hayama. That's right, Mr. Hokuto no Ken/Fist of the North Star himself! Of course, you can see that moment the intro video begins. It looks great, though, and the PC-FX's pretty stellar video/sprite capabilities ensure that the quality is as good as it gets - at least playing off of a CD-ROM!

And while there isn't much text in the game, this wasn't particularly easy to translate. The intro song is one of my favorite anime-type J-Pop themes ever, and the Japanese is pretty clear and easily understandable. The English is not. Dear God, that stupid f**king rap that appears at different parts - it was virtually impossible to decipher. Now that I got it, I feel like it should've been obvious the whole time, but believe it or not, I actually found myself looking at rhyme dictionaries for the word "Clarinet" because I could've sworn I heard that word in there, and obviously it didn't make sense. Hahaha, oh man. I didn't sub the ending song -- I don't really like it that much, and it would've make the screen really messy, since it's playing during the ending text scroll that had to be translated.

I really do hope that this video makes the game a bit more accessible to anyone who'd like to try it, because it's a really impressive proof of concept, and it's a whole lot of fun to experience, at least for the first few times.

So, this game is virtually impossible to figure out just by watching, and there's nothing in English on the internet on how to play it, so here's the quick and dirty version:

The whole game rests on a sort of "tug-of-war" mechanic. You input your attack, as does Player 2 or the CPU, and then you go back and forth, countering on another, until someone comes out on top and pulls their attack off. The lines of dots show what type of attack is getting ready to fly, and who is getting ready to launch it: If the dots are flowing from your portrait to the bad guy's, you have the attack priority. If its not interrupted, it'll connect. If they start hitting a counter-attack command, they might reverse the flow of the dot pattern. If they do this, you have a split second to counter it back - the game will allow for "volleys" of up to ten countered-attacks before it forces an attack through.

The dots also change color - yellow is a standard attack, blue is a regular special move, and red is a high power, GTFO of the way move. Especially on those red ones, you *must* block or you'll get beaten down really badly. Instead of a counter-attack, you can mash the II button to deflect - you can tell it worked if you see a frame pop up near the bottom with your character's eyes, indicating that you are bracing yourself and will nullify most of the attack damage.

Some attacks can only be done while moving, which can be done by double tapping up or down to change the distance between the fighters. You can easily tell how far they are from one another by the distance between their portraits at the top of the screen.

That's about all there really is to it - just knock them out before they knock you out! To get started, here are some of the moves from the game. I've only listed the moves common to every character and Kai's specific moves, but each character's specials are fairly similar:

Move closer together U,U
Move farther apart D,D

Common Attacks between Characters:
Upper Strong Atk U+IV
Upper Weak Atk U+III
Lower Strong Atk D+IV
Lower Weak Atk D+III
Pounce U,U during jump
Downward Atk U,D+IV during jump (when opp. is down)
Rising Str. Atk UR+IV (Close)
Projectile Atk L+III
Flame/fist Atk HCF+VI

Rebel Army Desperation Moves (1/4 health)
Many hits, weak UL+VI / UR+VI
Super fast hit, weak R,R,VI
Many hits, strong DL,D,R+VI
Super fast hit, strong L,R,L,R,VI
