BATTLE OF NARVIK, WITH FINNTROLL 1984 (BATTLEFIELD V)
The Narvik sea and land battles took place between April and June of 1940, with 2 sea battles on 10 and 13 April. These battles were some of the heaviest since the Poland Invasion in 1939! Operation Weserübung already commenced on April 9, 1940, because the iron ore mines in North Sweden were very important for any side. It was even more important to deny the enemy access to these mines via a Norwegian railway. Denmark was overrun in 6 hours and also Norway was attacked on April 9 already. The naval battles in the Ofotfjord ended in British victories and shipwrecked sailors of the Kriegsmarine were told to join the mountain troops and paratroopers of the 7th Air Division for the land battle. During the first naval battle where 2 destroyers on both sides were sunk, both commanders died in a fight that saw 163 German casualties. Friedrich Bonte for Germany and Bernard Warburton Lee for Britain. The second battle was overseen by Erich Bey for Germany and William Whitworth for Britain, and again the Brits prevailed. 28 British sailors died but 128 German sailors lost their lives, in addition to a few destroyers and one U-boat. The entire country of Norway depended on the rise or fall of the Allies Britain and France on a small strip of shore in North Norway. Germany was losing the battle initially and was pushed back to Bjørnfjell near the Swedish border, but because of the slow progress in the region there was a decision made by London and Paris to call back the Allied forces and to leave the Norwegians to fend for themselves. Also Polish fighters living in France had assisted in the battle. By late May, the situation became clear and the evac began. The King and government of Norway were evacuated on June 7 but on June 8, the carrier HMS Glorious and its 2 escort destroyers were attacked and sunk by German battleships. More than 1,500 people died and the responsible battleships were badly damaged, forcing them and the Germans to fall back to Trondheim. This allowed a safe passage for further evac missions.
