SIG KE7 REVIEW, WITH FINNTROLL 1984 (BATTLEFIELD V)
Name: SIG KE7
Designed: 1929 by Pal de Kiraly (Hung) and Gotthard End (Switz)
Produced: 1929-1938
Manufacturer: SIG (Switzerland)
Fire rate: 550 rpm (higher depending on variant)
The KE7 was a pioneer LMG because it had a trigger pull system to switch between fire modes in stead of a selector switch. Pulling the trigger back slightly would result in single shots, while a pull further back switched to auto mode. It was a recoil-operated design with an open bolt but was not used by the Swiss military, which already relied on the Furrer LMG-25 since 1925. The KE7 was designed for mass export and ended up in Latin America and China. Most times, it was made in 8mm Mauser but other variants were also available. Typical magazines contained 25 rounds. The only downside of this gun was the complexity to produce and the high cost, apart from a 2-man crew that was needed to operate and switch mags. A few of the KE7 LMGs were also sent to Britain for trials to get rid of the Lewis Gun but they opted for the Czechoslovak Bren gun in stead. Switzerland was never invaded by Germany during WWII but maintained a constant armed neutrality, fearful of a German invasion. By late 1942, Switzerland also lost Vichy-France as a possible "ally" and was surrounded by nothing but Axis members since then. Luckily, the Alps prevented an invasion but Switzerland was blockaded by both Germany as the Allies. Their main business during the war was exporting goods in exchange for food and fuel, and specifically gold was important for the Swiss. Large amounts of gold were sold to the Swiss National Bank by both sides in order to receive Swiss Francs to buy goods from neutral nations. About 581,000 Francs worth of gold was taken from Holocaust victims and sold, in addition to coal in return for electric power from the Swiss. The Allies turned a blind eye in order to keep their future relationship with Switzerland, while the country also became a safehaven for refugees and later German war criminals. Swiss control of important trans-alpine rail tunnels between Italy and Switzerland proved to be of very high importance to the Swiss role in WWII.
