Battlezone 98 Redux The Red Odyssey DLC Gameplay - Dire Straits
I'm finally back with another video after this couple of weeks! Now, with the mission Dire Straits.
The Chinese were forced to retreat from Ganymede after the CCA detected the intruder Fighter snooping around one of their Silos. Despite being a malfunction of the Cloaking Device the actual cause of the retreat, the Chinese Command really wanted to find someone to blame, and unfortunately, that "someone" was the Chinese Major.
Now demoted to Scrap Collection duties as a punishment, the Major is now codenamed as "Scavenger 3", and ordered to join the Scavenger Shift Alpha. However, this punishment will not be for long. A Scout Patrol got lost near Scavenger 3's position, so he was ordered to investigate their last reported location, but there was only... a Soviet Convoy! The CCA didn't lose the track of the Chinese, and they were plotting something, but the Chinese Command were unaware of those schemes.
Unarmed, Scavenger 3 could only follow the Soviet units at a distance, but then, the Chinese Base became the target of a relentless attack by the CCA, and Scavenger 3 is the only Chinese Officer qualified to handle the situation and hold off the attackers. Will he be able to save the situation and redeem himself, of will the Chinese have to surrender after the crushingg defeat inflicted by the CCA? Let's find out!
I really struggled to complete this mission, which is the first one that takes place on Elysium. It is insanely hard since the Soviets attack with huge lots of units and there is a brief time when you have to leave the base to deal with some Artillery Units that shoot untrackable bombs (maybe it is done with some special commands in the source code). The trick is to fulfill the conditions described next:
0- Pick up all the Scrap before going to investigate the disappearance of the Scout Patrol, but don't deposit the last load into the Silo. 3 extra pieces of Scrap are a huge addition to your starting resources, in order to begin the construction of the defensive perimeter.
1- Build a perimeter with Gun Towers and equip them with the Flash Cannon (the AT-Stabber they originally have is trash). Start by the Northern Approach and continue with the Western and Southern Approaches.
2- Ensure to collect Scrap quickly by protecting your Scavengers for at least the first four attack waves.
3- Build a lot of Yeti Tanks after the first two attack waves, once the perimeter is covered by the Gun Towers with the Flash Cannon.
4- Destroy the CCA Howitzers located 2000 meters to the West of the Base after repelling the attack wave that comes right after Command tells you about the Artillery location. I briefly toggled the Radar to the Minimap Mode at minute 34:25, so you can pinpoint the correct location without getting lost.
5- Use your Cloaking Device when you become overwhelmed. The enemy units will steer their attention to other targets after cloaking. It's also nice in order to avoid the Shadower Missile.
6- Take out the Golem Walkers before they reach your base, using the terrain to hide from their Blast Cannons. If they manage to reach your Recycler, you are toast.
For more details, watch the video. I must say, though, that I got lucky as they attacked the portion of the Base perimeter I already covered with defenses. I didn't have the same luck in my failed attempts (which were many, at least fifteen I remember right away), so don't feel bad if it doesn't work for the first time.
