Think you know what went into the making of 1899? Today, we’re going behind the scenes on Netflix’s newest series from showrunners Baron Bo Odar and Jantje Friese, the co-creators of Dark. It uses LED-Volume Technology completely unlike anything that we’ve ever seen come out of Netflix before! This technology uses a video game engine to build virtual sets, projecting the image onto what’s essentially a giant television set behind our actors. In fact, this new technology may just have been too good, considering Andreas Pietschmann actually got seasick on set! Far from being an excuse to make another costume drama history series, the showrunners actually put a lot of thought into their reasons for setting 1899 in the year they did. In fact, the showrunners even took care to include plenty of easter eggs sprinkled throughout the series to suggest that our characters may just be trapped in a simulation. Bad news for Keanu Reeves fans, but the opening credit song, “White Rabbit” by Jefferson Airplane, isn’t actually meant as a reference to the Matrix. That being said, there is a number of cinematic influences for 1899. Baron Bo Odar has said that he took inspiration from Ridley Scott’s Alien, and from Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, but he wanted to go out of his way to avoid comparisons to James Cameron’s Titanic as much as possible! 1899 was filmed out of Potsdam, Germany, a city that actually is no stranger to Hollywood productions. Previous movies to have been filmed out of Potsdam include V For Vendetta, The Matrix Resurrections, and Inglourious Basterds.
