After playing the weird Ben 10: Omniverse 2, I became curious about High Voltage Software, so I went and tried out one of the developer's earlier games Ben 10: Protector of Earth on PS2 as well.

The gameplay is similar to Omniverse 2, sans the crazy line running sections and more of a 2,5D vibe to level design. It's a tried and true beat 'em up at heart, with some aspects like over-the-top QTE finishers to bosses ripped straight out of God of War. Overall it's a decent if a bit monotonous game... and true to form, there were a few out of bounds spots as well.

0:00 - this first one is right at the start of the game. By doing higher jumps with Four Arms, then switching back to Ben and doing a roll, Ben can slip through the wall. If you can stay on the floor while out of bounds, you can run to the south of the main level. Unfortunately it doesn't seem you can do anything too curious from here. If you move too close to the main level, the fight is triggered like usual...

0:26 - meanwhile, trying to go around the fight is not possible because of invisible walls. Doesn't look like the next part of the level is loaded at the moment either!

1:02 - the second OoB is in the second level. There's a gate that you need to pass through before it closes using XL8R. But if you instead do a small "high jump" using Ben's roll, you can end up on top of the gate, and from there switching to Four Arms you can jump over the boundary and land OoB.

A note on doing the high jump: if you press X and O quickly in that order in air, Ben does a roll with positive vertical air momentum and flies in an arc. This is not supposed to happen, I think. It seems this tactic can let Ben slip into small gaps in the wall that he can't pass through in alien forms (although I still haven't tested it much).

While in OoB, there is a wide stretch of floor there for some reason. It's not regular floor either: Ben teeters as if near an edge if you try to move around normally. Jumping is the most convenient way to move instead, but straying too far results in falling all the way down and getting a game over.

You can follow the stretch of floor around the corner and see the out of bounds area from a few different angles. But eventually the camera just stops following Ben altogether, leaving him stranded in the middle of the vast expanses of nothingness. How existential.
