When we think “balance”, we usually think “maths”. Although maths is the foundation of all balance, the player’s perception of it — if something is fair or worthwhile — also depends on non-numerical factors. We can name here things like the visual presentation of a feature, but also the player's cultural and personal background. In this talk, we will have a look at these factors and how to use them when balancing a game, using specific examples from the newly released Frostpunk 2.
