This game was sorta like the prelude to Golden Sun, but it was almost universally panned by major gaming publications and aggregate scores on review sites. I'm not going to lie to myself either; For a long time, I really hated this game. Even when I pop it in on rare ocassions today, I can still see many of the reasons why I didn't like the game to begin with. Still, when the game nets a 40%-60% average, I have to wonder if it was panned a tad bit too much. It's even reported to have gotten a 0.5 out of 5.0 by Official PlayStation Magazine... that's just too much hate. The soundtrack alone is worth at least a 0.5, so the rest of the game should at least bump it to a 1.0. Of course, none of that really matters anyway.

The game is mostly your run-of-the-mill, horribly cliched RPG with lots of annoying dungeons and quests (Samson perhaps being the worst), tough battles, and very high encounter rates that perhaps artificially extend this otherwise very short game. If it looks like a cross between Shining Force and Golden Sun (though this predates GS), that's because it should-- Camelot (the developers) originated in the early 90s and was originally known as Sega CD4 until they changed their name to Sonic! Software Planning and created "Shining in the Darkness", "Shining Force", and "Shining Force II", among others. They sort of seperated from Sega in the mid 90s but continued to support the Shining franchise.

BtB is one of the first "Non-Sega" efforts by the company and they continue to develop games today, from Golden Sun to various sports titles and even express interest in new Shining titles and the "Breath of Fire" series. BtB has few sidequests and secrets and is relatively straightforward. It's not a HORRIBLE game, but I wouldn't call it essential by any means. This video shows a few things in the game. Enjoy.
