Soul Master is an obscure Playstation card/board game published and developed by Koei back in late 97'. This game definitely isn't for everyone, but I do see some potential in it, some of which makes the game interesting to play. However, the visuals aren't very good and the music is pretty mediocre. Also, the computer is pretty cheap and loves to get their way. Still, the object of the game is to defeat the powerful spirit at the center of the board, and you can do this most of the time with little trouble. If you wound the boss enemy though, you might be cheated, because the CPU will come to finish the boss off and take away your prize, so it's usually a good idea to go around the board searching for monsters and "training" to boost your HP and monsters' HP and stats until one of the CPU opponents attack the boss first. Thankfully, you can save during the matches to help out.

You can play in story mode (which I did here) or multi-play against up to four people. You must move across the board and "mark" areas to build your character's power. As you move around and mark places, you will fight monsters and if you beat them, you can make them join you. The game prides itself on "Soul Power" and "Elemental Power" and there are four elements that you need to know about:

Fire
Water
Wind
Earth

Fire is effective against Earth. Earth is effective against Wind. Wind is effective against Water. Water is effective against Fire. You can also obtain combat spells that the summoner (you, the player) can use that have different elements. You can also do a melee attack if you have high attack power and don't have good elemental combat spells and/or monsters. You can get equipment items too that help you just by having them...there are a variety of other factors such as terrain and "global" cards too.

If you can stomach the graphics... since the framerate is terrible and the nice manual artwork does NOT transition into the game (a faster framerate would've been okay)...and the less-than-stellar music, you may find something to like in this game. After a few tries, the game may occupy a little more of my time (I thought it was complete garbage at first)...STILL, if you want some awesome board games, you are better off trying two Super Famicom titles: Sugoro Quest ++ (The NES game, Sugoro Quest, is also good) and ESPECIALLY Tadaima Yuusha Boshuuchuu Okawari.

Anyway, enjoy.
