0I didn’t do much research on this before I started playing, but the cover reminded me of FIST which is also in my ‘to play’ list and it looked like a decent adventure game. I was wrong. It’s not bad, it just doesn’t do anything particularly well.
The graphics aren’t very sharp for a PS4 game. The world is nicely designed but it doesn’t look as good as Zelda on Switch, which it should easily be able to match. The character design is really ugly. You can’t even create a nice looking one in the character creation screen.
The combat is weak. You are supposed to use 3 different special moves to unlock a power move within combat but since you keep changing weapons, you have to unlock the specials for each weapon which is time consuming and by the end of the game, I completely forgot where the menu to do that was anyway because the UI is terrible.
Speaking of the UI, it’s very hard to find the menu to upgrade your items and kind of pointless when you keep finding new weapons and armour anyway. You can even find workstations that upgrade your weapons in a different way. It makes no sense to have 2 different types of weapon upgrade, especially when you might find a better weapon in the next 10 minutes.
The dialogue is annoying. You have to wait for the NPC to make their noise, before the narrator translates and you can read the subtitles. They change words of real-life objects to silly things like “snuffleblub”, so you have no idea what they are talking about half the time. This sort of language leads me to believe this game is for kids but then you have dialogue choices to “kill” tribe leaders or creatures you find.
There are lots of bugs, and you feel like you might get stuck at any time. I had 1 random blue screen crash when I was just walking. There have been times where I couldn’t use the fast travel mechanic on the map. Due to either fast travel markers disappearing, or the game telling me I can’t travel because I’m on water (which I was definitely on land). It also stops you from fast travelling when on a steed or inside a building which is a completely unnecessary design choice and just serves to inconvenience. The amount of fast travel points seem completely random as well. You could travel a long way without finding one and you might have to take a long time travelling if you need to backtrack when there should have been a travel point. It doesn’t even show you where a travel is, so you might just miss it because you don’t want to spend ages looking for one that might not exist.
I had to take the long route many times because of the bugs and lack of fast travel points.
There was one occasion where I had to climb a rope to progress the main quest, but the rope glitched and the bottom section was at an angle that I couldn’t reach. I luckily cheesed my way up but it was very close to being a case of fast travelling away and then taking the long journey back to reload the rope.
It feels like a PS2 game, and would have been good if released in the early 2000’s but there are too many bad design decisions that do away with progress over the years.
It’s not a terrible game and I didn’t hate my 13 hours of gameplay, but I definitely could have been playing something better.
