Bitcoin's source code change campaign
Bitcoin's source code change campaign
Environmental groups have launched a campaign to change the source code of Bitcoin. Decentralized BTC works with proof-of-work logic. It is claimed that this change in Bitcoin mining, which is claimed to consume more electricity than Sweden, will reduce energy consumption by 99 percent.
Non-profit environmental groups called for Bitcoin by launching the 'Change the Code, Not the Climate' campaign on Tuesday. He argued that Bitcoin production consumes more energy than Sweden, and simply by changing its code, it will reduce energy consumption by 99.9 percent.
With the campaign called 'Change your code, not the climate' launched in partnership with Greenpeace and the Environmental Working Group, Bitcoin was called upon and asked to change the software code. Environmental groups, based on Cambridge University data, stated that the energy consumed in Bitcoin production is more than Sweden. It was stated that 99.9 percent less energy will be consumed in Bitcoin production with only the change of the software code.
Greenpeace is running the campaign with Chris Larsen, co-founder of Ripple (XRP), a crypto protocol. Unlike BTC, XRP is not decentralized and has an owner.
The two groups claim that the source code can be changed by the decision of the 30 names at the center of BTC.
According to some information given within the framework of the campaign; It has been suggested that if Bitcoin is widely adopted, the carbon dioxide emissions required to produce Bitcoin could heat the planet by 2 degrees Celsius.
In the campaign statement, "Bitcoin requires so much power that 'miners' have started buying US coal plants," emphasizing that deals with the oil industry have begun to be made in Texas. It was stated that energy use can be reduced by 99.9 percent in Bitcoin production by changing only a software code, and Ethereum made this change.
WHAT IS PROOF OF WORK?
Proof of Work, or in its direct Turkish translation, "proof of labor" is a term and protection method used in the world of technology many years before BTC.
The developers of the system aimed to be protected from spam and DDOS attacks. Bitcoin, on the other hand, applied this system to a wallet logic. This system, which is widely used in crypto technology, increases security while increasing the transaction cost. For each transaction, verification is required from the first registration in the wallet.
