In this episode, which covers the end of the "Surface Tension" chapter, the entire "Forget About Freeman" chapter, and most of the "Lambda Core" chapter, Gordon witnesses the remains of the US Armed Forces pull out of Black Mesa, badly bruised by the alien invaders, and manages, after a lot of turmoil, to reach the Lambda Core facilities, where he now needs to power up the reactor in order to repair the teleportation system and get through to the last group of scientists that has barricaded itself from the outside world.
