Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold. Apogee's FPS based on the Wolfenstein 3D engine, with several new elements such as being able to return to floors, having switches effect floors other than the ones you're on, key cards that are consumed on use, friendly NPCs, vending machines... This game almost qualifies for my previous FPS/RPG Hybrid Retrospective (honestly, about as much as games like Cybermage: Darklight Awakening did). And when this game launched, it got a lot of praise.

For all of one week. Because it came out December 3, 1993. December 10, 1993, saw the release of a game that changed the landscape entirely, and buried everything else in its wake. Poor Blake Stone here was crushed a week after release by none other than Doom. So, if it wasn't for the juggernaut, how would this game have stood up?
