Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption playthrough Part 1
Vampire: The Masquerade. The White Wolf pen & paper RPG that's been a main rival for D&D for many years. There have been a couple attempts to translate it to other formats, card games, video games, etc. And we're here to get a look at this 2000 attempt.
This one is not available on Steam, but it is on GOG for their usual $6 price tag, and runs fine on modern systems. It even has wide-screen support, but I quickly abandoned that, since it was cutting the heads off characters in cut-scenes. (The support is THERE, but the game is not designed for it.) The videos cause the window to change resolution a lot, which is hampering my recording, but I think I have everything straightened out.... finally. (As you can hear me in the recording, it took several attempts to get it right.)
It's a bit Diablo, in that it's an action RPG controlled by mostly the mouse. I don't like that you can't rebind any of the controls, but it works fairly well MOST of the time. I say most, because once you get a party member with you, combat can become troublesome as you can accidentally click on them to start draining their blood instead of enemies. And, for a combat that requires movement, it can be VERY difficult to get around with any decent reaction time.
There are other flaws in the game, like a pretty ham-fisted subplot, but the lore of the setting intrigues me. I've not really read any of the White Wolf stuff, so I am coming into this fairly blind and letting the game speak for itself. And, as of yet, I am curious to see where it leads. -- Watch live at https://www.twitch.tv/the_nametag
